Part 3 of Caroline Bingley
When I published the blog previously, I forgot to add the last phase. That phase doesn't pertain to Caroline though, and I'll show you why.
Phase 5: Motherly Instincts |
In this stage, the girl transforms from a girl into a woman. I say that because the main focus of the girl is no longer to obtain the person of interest, but rather care for them and love them and be a good strong woman to back up her man. (At least, that's how it should be in my opinion.) In this case, the girl sheds her childlike ways and takes on the role of a mother, caring and tailoring to her husband and supporting him emotionally. There is no longer any doubt as to whether or not he cares for her too, because it has already been established and they are together as a couple or engaged.
This stage only occurs after the person of focus has been acquired (ie. she gets the guy). This doesn't pertain to Caroline because she has not yet won the affections of Mr. Darcy.
Here in-lies the problem. If Caroline doesn't obtain Mr. Darcy as her 'man-candy' , she will be trapped in Phase 4 for all of eternity. She will always be jealous of someone else, and always feel she is entitled to Mr. Darcy because of her wealth and social class. She will never wrap her head around the fact that love doesn't come from money or class.
This fact makes her feelings towards Elizabeth grave and dishonest. And her wrath towards Jane for loving her brother is just as bad, if not worse.
In order to appease herself, and feel comfortable in her standing with her brother and his friend, Caroline must use Phase 4 to her advantage and eliminate the competition. Which is exactly what she does.
